If you are in to the deeper lyrical rap other than always talking about money or women then you will love this album. Blu is a very talented rapper and defintely one of my new favourites having only recently discovering him although hes been around a while now. On top of that, Exile, the man behind the tracks does a great job and his beats are exactly to my taste.

Molar VST

The request for a Molar VST tutorial is answered with this..... I did not make it because I have never used it, I hope this helps!

Ok, so I thought I would add some albums and mixtapes too from all genres that I have collected over the years. First up...

ReWind - Sound of UK Garage ★★★★☆

Released in 2000, I remember this was my very first garage album I bought when i was about 14. Still liking some of the tracks on here... mixing is plain though just straight up beat matching but the songs make up for it. If you like the oldschool UKG tracks then download and enjoy if you never heard any then download and try!

PreSonus Studio One

I had a little test run with this DAW last night, not long only about an hour but it looks very promising! Looks nice and seems easy enough to navigate... almost everything is drag and drop which keeps things simple.

This very well could be a DAW to keep your eyes on...it's young but I've heard some good things about it. Comparisons to Logic Pro have been made. I' have never tried Logic as I am a windows user but I have heard amazing things about that too. At my first glance I saw a lot of similarities to Cubase...it wouldn't be bad if it was like that either.

Hopefully those comparisons are true. Tonight I will delve a little deeper into it and see what's in there, one thing I did notice was the terrible VST it came with... very weaks sounds... probably even worse than FL stock sounds... but I'm hoping the actual workstation lives up to my expectations because if you are like me, and have all your 3rd party plugins already, then the stock is just extra and it won't bother you.

I let you know how it goes!

MDA ePiano This is actually a pretty good VST and it doesn't cost a penny. With a little tweaking it can produce a decent enough sound, if you're after that ePiano sound then try this, it may be just what you're looking for.

DJ Goldie Kit A few nice drum sounds and also a couple of decent soundfonts.
Fantom Euro Kit Not a bad kit but nothing special either, some useful stuff in here.
MB Kit Pretty good little kit with some useful drum sounds (root note is c3 not c5).
The Runners Kit A couple of nice organ sounds in this kit, not the best Runners kit I've heard or have but it's ok.

About Cubase

I'm not going to go too deep in to these "About's" because these aren't reviews and if you are reading this then you already have either FL or Cubase and came to learn. so.

First off, I will talk about the way Cubase looks. It's much easier on the eye than FL's dull grey exterior with a nice bright white and blue mask. Now... I think everyone knows FL is known to be user friendly, easy to pick up and find what you are looking for instantly but...Cubase is not that far behind in this category. Once you know where everything lies you will have no problems navigating your way around...and quickly.

Cubase comes with pretty good VST's to start with and you can always add others just like FL. Halion is a great VST with a whole bunch of decent sounds ranging from bass to piano and strings to lead synths. Plugins such as the GrooveAgentOne are also very useful, it's MPC like looks are easy to understand with a screen display for all adjustments makes everything so clear and easy to understand. I use this plugin all the time and insert the beat designer to make my drums which I have made a video on.

My opinion on Cubase is... it's up there with the best of them The sound quality in Cubase is GREAT and you will notice this straight away...  anybody looking for a great DAW will not be disappointed in this product.

20 SnaresA few nice snares in this kit but nothing amazing, definitely useful though.
24 Nas Samples Kit These sounds are crisp and clear, I like the kicks and snares in this Nas kit.
9th Wonder Kit I like Wonders beats and I like this kit , it has a lot of useful snares and hi hats. The kicks aren't the best I've come across but they aren't bad either. A must download for the snares alone
Eminem Kit Highlight of this Eminem kit is a couple of the bass drum hits and the snares. Most of the sounds come direct from Eminems tracks and you can tell...I guess it's up to you if that is a bad thing.
House & Electro Kicks Kit It's called house and electro kicks but most of these could be usedfor any genre. not terrible at all.

Industry KitThis kit just didn't do anything for me, there was however one bright spark in this kit and that is the "joey string". The rest of the kit just wasn't for me but... you may disagree.
Jazze Pha KitI think I disliked this kit even more than the Industry Kit....you perhaps could find something useful in it.
The Light Kit One or two of the kicks I have found useful in the past.

About FL Studio

FL Studio is a GREAT beginners DAW. It's very simple and user friendly, however...for this reason it has a bad reputation. A lot of people put down FL for sounding cheap and "like a toy" this is somewhat true but.... this also has a lot to do with the stock sounds it comes with which to be honest are utter rubbish. I don't think I have ever used ANY of the stock instruments or synths that it comes with.

It's all about VST's which like I said in my welcome post we will get to in due time. When you finally get some nice sounds you will be suprised what FL Studio is capable of. If your tracks have bad, cheap, toyish sounds the average guy on the street WILL NOT like your beat, it doesnt matter if the melody is hot or not. The sound of the track is the first thing people notice and if it has bad sounds instinctively they will be like "wtf is this? it sounds terrible". If they hear clear, crisp and nice sounds they will just move their attention to the actual song and then decide if they like it dependent on the track as a whole... so sounds are VERY IMPORTANT.

I think why people dislike FL is because a lot of the time you can tell it was made in FL. If you listen to  beats made on FL and then listen to some made on another DAW you will be able to notice a difference. I hear some tracks sometimes where the producer doesn't like to reveal the DAW he is using but to my ears I can tell it was made on FL.

Now I have also heard some that I couldn't tell it was made on FL so is it the producer or the DAW that makes them sound that way? That question I don't ever think will be answered because it's all opinion.

My opinion on FL is....it's a  great beginners DAW or a great DAW for people who are midly interested in making tracks at home for fun and a hobby. I like FL overall and I still use it sometimes and I think I always will but I would never fully go back to it. It's easy to learn  but if you're planning on trying to making a living from music production i would suggest another DAW which we will also come to later.

FL Studio:Installing VST's

As said in the tutorial some VST's will need installing on your PC first. This procedure is no different than installing any other program so we will skip that part but if you encounter any problems just send me a message and I will try my best to help you.

Welcome!

'ello aspiring beatmakers!

My name is Cagney and I have created this blog for people who are interested in making music through FL Studio (formally known as Fruityloops Studio) and/or Cubase but have no idea where to start. It can all seem very daunting when you first open your selected DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) but give it a little time and you will be knocking out music within minutes. I am by no means a "pro" I am still learning a lot all the time but thought I'd share what with you what I can.... and try to make your learning curve a little less steep than mine has been.

I am going to start with the very basics and go from there. This includes how to get sounds you have downloaded in to your chosen sequencer...if you are using FL Studio you will already know the stock instruments and drums sound pretty bad, so my first advice to you is to go searching for some new sounds. You can buy some nice kits from certain places but if you look in the right places you will find just as good sounding kits for FREE!... I will upload some kits for you so you don't have to scour the realms of the matrix looking yourself.

Along with tutorials for FL Studio and Cubase I will also make some tutorials for some plugins/VST's but lets not run before we can walk...we will come to those a little later.

I will be updating this blog on a regular basis so if these tutorials are a little too basic for you please come back because soon enough there will be tutorials with more advanced techniques. If you have any requests for tutorials do not hesitate to contact me and I will make one...

I hope you will enjoy these coming tutorials and if you have any questions or queries you need answering feel free to send me a message or comment and I will do my best to help you figure out your problems and get you back on track (pun intended).

I would also like to add, these tutorials do not have voice.... they have written sentances. I have yet to figure out how to record the sound from my built in mic at the same time the audio from the screen recorder is playing...I will try to get that sorted as soon as possible but for now with these basic tutorials... I think it is easy to understand with text.

I'm hoping to help you learn quickly and clearly, sooooo.....

LETS MAKE SOME MUSIC!!!
